The Workforce Partnership of Shelby County proudly celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Career Exploration Academy, an annual event that helps students explore local career pathways and connect with employers across the region. What began as a small initiative has grown into one of the county’s most impactful workforce development programs, giving hundreds of 8th graders the chance to discover careers available right here in Shelby County.
This year’s Career Exploration Academy in Shelby County brought together educators, businesses, and community partners to create meaningful, hands-on experiences. Students rotated through interactive stations—ranging from welding and engineering to healthcare, utilities, and manufacturing—guided by local professionals who use these skills daily.
John Bertsch captured the mission of the event:
“Show ’em that there’s all kinds of opportunities… whether they work for me or work for somebody else. At the end of the day, I want ’em employed. I want ’em to work in Shelby County.”
Students shared that the Academy helped them understand the variety of career options in the county and gave them confidence to explore fields they may not have known existed. Many emphasized how valuable it was to try hands-on demonstrations and speak directly with employers.
Educators and industry partners also noted how programs like the Career Exploration Academy strengthen the connection between classrooms and local employers. Companies appreciate meeting potential future employees, while students gain early insight into the pathways that can lead to a successful career in Shelby County.
As the Workforce Partnership looks to the future, its commitment remains focused on supporting career exploration, strengthening school-to-career connections, and preparing students for the opportunities available across Shelby County’s growing industries.
